Sources & Methodology
Transparent Documentation on Calendar Sourcing, Geographic Modeling, and Data Classification
1. Independence & Provenance
KalnirnayOnline.com is an independent digital calendar service. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or operated on behalf of Sumangal Press, the official Kalnirnay printed publications, or any religious trust. Data presented on this website is compiled from open government records, traditional ephemerides, and established almanac references.
2. Reference Location & Geographic Coordinates
Unlike Gregorian solar dates, Vedic Panchang calculations (including Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, Tithi start/end, and Rahu Kaal) differ according to local latitude, longitude, and elevation.
Unless explicitly indicated otherwise, reference timings documented across our portal use the following default geographic coordinates:
- Primary Reference City: Pune, Maharashtra, India
- Latitude: 18.5204° N
- Longitude: 73.8567° E
- Time Zone: Indian Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30)
For cities outside Maharashtra or distant locations (e.g., Nagpur, Delhi, or overseas regions), exact sunrise and Tithi crossover timings can differ by 10 to 45 minutes.
3. Sourcing Framework
Calendar events are sourced through three primary channels:
- National & State Gazettes: Official gazettes published by the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra for public bank holidays and statutory non-working days.
- Shalivahana Shaka Amanta Tradition: The regional Maharashtrian lunar system that commences lunar months on the day following Amavasya (New Moon).
- Vedic Muhurat Texts: Classical astrology guidelines regarding auspicious wedding timings (Vivah Muhurat), Griha Pravesh (Vastu Shanti), and the Chaturmas observance period.
4. Resolution of Conflicting Dates
In cases where different astronomical traditions (such as Drik Ganita vs. Surya Siddhanta) produce different dates for a festival (e.g., Akshaya Tritiya or Vat Purnima), we follow these guidelines:
- We mark the date in our central database as
requires_review. - We remove unverified assertions of certainty from FAQ answers and structured data.
- We place an explanatory note on the corresponding month page advising users of the discrepancy.
5. Important User Advisory
This website is intended for informational reference and general educational awareness. When planning life milestones, weddings, housewarmings, or religious ceremonies, users should always cross-verify dates and muhurat windows with an authorized family priest (Guruji) or a verified local Panchang.
