Understanding the 5 Elements of Panchang

A traditional Hindu calendar is called a Panchang because it is built upon five (Pancha) key astronomical elements (Angas). These elements vary by geographic location and calculation method:

1. Tithi (Lunar Day)
The angular distance between the Sun and Moon. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month, divided into Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). Fasts like Ekadashi and Sankashti Chaturthi are observed based on Tithi.
2. Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion)
The sector of the ecliptic through which the Moon passes. There are 27 Nakshatras in Vedic astrology. The daily Nakshatra helps in matching horoscopes and determining auspicious windows.
3. Vara (Solar Day)
The solar day of the week (Ravivara, Somavara, Mangalavara, Budhavara, Guruvara, Shukravara, and Shanivara). Each day is ruled by a specific planetary deity.
4. Yoga (Auspicious Angle)
The mathematical sum of the longitude of the Sun and Moon, divided into 27 parts. Each Yoga is classified as either auspicious (Shubha) or inauspicious (Ashubha) for daily activities.
5. Karana (Half Tithi)
Half of a Tithi (6 degrees of angular difference). There are 11 Karanas in total—4 fixed (Sthira) and 7 recurring (Chara). Karanas help determine suitable periods for specific activities.

दैनिक पंचांग व खगोलशास्त्रीय गणना (Daily Panchang & Astronomical Timings)

This site does not calculate live astronomical timings.

Traditional Marathi Months & Indian Seasons (Rutu)

The Marathi calendar follows lunar cycles, so lunar months do not align exactly with Gregorian months. The year is divided into 12 lunar months and 6 traditional Indian seasons (Rutuy):

Rutu (Season) Marathi Months Approximate English Months Cultural Context
Vasant (Spring) Chaitra & Vaishakha Mid-March to Mid-May New year begins with Gudi Padwa; pleasant climate and harvesting.
Grishma (Summer) Jyeshtha & Ashadha Mid-May to Mid-July Peak summer followed by early pre-monsoon showers.
Varsha (Monsoon) Shravana & Bhadrapada Mid-July to Mid-September Heavy monsoons; holy months with vegetarian fasts and Ganeshotsav.
Sharad (Autumn) Ashwin & Kartik Mid-September to Mid-November Post-monsoon clearing, harvest celebrations like Dussehra and Diwali.
Hemant (Pre-Winter) Margashirsha & Pausha Mid-November to Mid-January Cool, breezy climate; onset of Margashirsha Guruvar fasts.
Shishir (Winter) Magha & Phalguna Mid-January to Mid-March Coldest weeks leading to Makar Sankranti and Mahashivratri.

The Shalivahana Shaka Calendar System

Maharashtra follows the Shalivahana Shaka calendar. The Shaka era began in 78 CE, commemorating the legendary victory of King Shalivahana. The Shaka Year is 78 years behind the Gregorian year (2026 CE corresponds to Shaka 1948). The new Shaka year starts on Gudi Padwa.

Unlike the Vikram Samvat calendar followed in North India (Purnimanta system), the Shalivahana Shaka calendar used in Maharashtra follows the Amanta system, where every month starts the day after the new moon (Amavasya).
